Sercos Background Information

Sercos (Serial Realtime Communication System) is one of the leading digital interfaces for communication between control systems, drives and decentralized peripheral devices. Sercos has been used in machine engineering for more than 20 years and is implemented in over 500 thousand applications with more than 3 million real time nodes. Sercos I became a worldwide standard in 1995, and the higher speed Sercos II followed in 1999. The third generation, Ethernet-based Sercos III was introduced in 2005. All Sercos generations conform to IEC international standards.

Sercos III integrates the open Ethernet protocol with high-speed data transfer at 100 MBits Full-Duplex per second. Additional innovations include improved safety, the construction of efficient networks with minimum cabling due to a redundant ring and/or line structure, and direct cross communication between control systems and between individual Sercos slaves.

The product offerings for Sercos III currently include well over 200 innovative automation products from more than 60 manufacturers. The product spectrum covers electric drives and controls, pneumatic and hydraulic drives and controls and general automation devices, e.g., distributed I/Os, vision systems and encoders.

A broad range of machine builders, including technological and global market leaders in printing, packaging, machine tools and robotics, apply Sercos III in their machines and systems.

Sercos III offers developers and users planning reliability due to continuity, a clear migration path and available product conformance testing. This ensures the interoperability of products from diverse manufacturers that use the same standardized interfaces, operating commands and synchronization methods. With its open, manufacturer-independent architecture based on Ethernet, Sercos III is a universal bus for all automation solutions.
